LONDON — Oscar and Emmy winner Riz Ahmed has officially returned to the small screen with his highly anticipated series Bait, which premiered globally on Prime Video yesterday, March 25, 2026.
The six-episode series, which Ahmed created, wrote, and stars in, has debuted to a rare 100% “Fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics hailing it as a “career-best” performance and a searingly funny exploration of modern identity.
The Plot: A Bond Audition Gone Viral
The series follows Shah Latif (Ahmed), a struggling British-Pakistani actor whose career is mostly defined by being mistaken for Dev Patel. His life is thrown into a “frenetic four-day spiral” when he lands an audition to be the next James Bond.
As rumors of his potential casting go viral, Shah is forced to navigate:
- The “Weight of Representation”: The global pressure of being a “Brown Bond.”
- Family Chaos: Constant interference from his unfiltered cousin Zulfi (played by Guz Khan) and his skeptical parents.
- A High-Stakes Thriller: A surrealist twist where Shah’s real life begins to mirror the very spy thriller he is auditioning for, complete with “chase sequences” involving critics and his own inner demons.
A “Dazzling” Ensemble Cast
The show is being praised not only for Ahmed’s “narcissistic and excellent” lead performance but for its vibrant supporting cast that brings the South Asian diaspora experience to life with sharp, “second-gen linguistic dexterity.”
Critics’ Verdict: “Electrifying”
Reviews from the 2026 Sundance and SXSW premieres set a high bar that the full release appears to have cleared.
”Part semi-autobiographical sitcom in the vein of Curb Your Enthusiasm and part surrealist industry satire… a jaw-dropping hoot,” wrote The Guardian in its 5-star review.
The series is noted for its “Safdie-esque” tension, blending dark humor with an “existential crisis” that plays out across London’s Brick Lane and beyond. Showrun by Ahmed alongside Ben Karlin (Modern Family), Bait is being framed as a defining piece of “Pan-English” television for Amazon MGM Studios.
