The truth is officially moving to Hulu. After years of speculation and “I want to believe” rumors, the streamer has officially handed a pilot order to Ryan Coogler’s reimagining of the sci-fi staple, The X-Files.
Adding serious weight to the revival, SAG Award nominee Danielle Deadwyler (Till, The Piano Lesson) has been cast as one of the two series leads.
A New Era for the Unexplained
Coogler, fresh off the massive success of his supernatural thriller Sinners (which recently garnered a record-breaking 16 Oscar nominations), is set to write, direct, and executive produce the pilot.
The project is described as a “diverse remount” of the original 1993 phenomenon created by Chris Carter. While the iconic duo of Mulder and Scully remains the gold standard for many, this version introduces a fresh pairing of federal agents.

The Logline
The official description for the pilot echoes the DNA of the original while hinting at a modern perspective:
“Two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.”
The production is reportedly eyeing Vancouver for filming—a nostalgic nod to the first five seasons of the original series. Recent casting calls also suggest the pilot may center on cases involving Indigenous communities, signaling a shift toward more grounded, socially relevant mysteries.
”Low and Slow” Development
Coogler has been vocal about his personal connection to the franchise, comparing his love for The X-Files to his childhood bond with the Rocky films. Deadwyler recently teased that the project is “cooking slowly and with lots of flavor,” assuring fans that the team is taking their time to ensure the reboot honors the legacy of the “spooky” episodes that defined the ’90s.
While Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny are not currently attached, Anderson has previously expressed openness to a cameo, citing her immense respect for Coogler’s “genius” direction.
