PHILADELPHIA – Class isn’t letting out anytime soon at Willard R. Abbott Public School. ABC officially announced Wednesday that its Emmy-winning flagship comedy, Abbott Elementary, has been renewed for a sixth season.
The announcement, which covers the upcoming 2026-27 television season, marks the fourth consecutive year that the Quinta Brunson-led mockumentary has been the first show on the network’s slate to receive an early renewal.
A Character-First Reveal
In true Abbott fashion, the news was shared with a creative twist. Fans who called a dedicated phone number shared on the show’s social media accounts were treated to an outgoing voicemail from none other than Barbara Howard (played by Emmy-winner Sheryl Lee Ralph).
”I am too busy celebrating the good news to come to the phone right now,” the voicemail message says. “In case you haven’t heard, Abbott Elementary will be back again for Season 6 on ABC! I cannot wait to get back to shaping the young minds and hearts of the future.”
The message ends with Barbara playfully scolding fellow teacher Melissa Schemmenti for being late to a nail appointment.
Ratings Juggernaut
The renewal comes as no surprise to industry insiders. Despite a shifting media landscape, Abbott Elementary continues to dominate as TV’s No. 1 comedy among adults 18-49 in multi-platform viewing.
Season 5, which is currently airing, has seen the show take “big swings”—including a special episode filmed at a Philadelphia Phillies game and a storyline involving the faculty relocating to an abandoned mall during school renovations.
Cast and Production
The core ensemble is expected to return in full for the sixth installment:
- Quinta Brunson (Janine Teagues)
- Tyler James Williams (Gregory Eddie)
- Sheryl Lee Ralph (Barbara Howard)
- Lisa Ann Walter (Melissa Schemmenti)
- Janelle James (Ava Coleman)
- Chris Perfetti (Jacob Hill)
- William Stanford Davis (Mr. Johnson)
Created by Brunson, the series has garnered over 30 Emmy nominations and four wins since its debut in 2021, revitalizing the broadcast sitcom genre for a new generation.
