VANCOUVER — The pantheon of Prime Video’s God of War series continues to expand as Amazon MGM Studios officially announced that Sonya Walger (Lost, For All Mankind) has been cast as the pivotal Vanir goddess, Freya.
The casting, confirmed on March 26, 2026, marks a high-profile addition to the live-action adaptation of the Sony PlayStation masterpiece. Walger will take on a recurring role as the former Queen of the Valkyries in a story that follows Kratos and his son, Atreus, on their perilous journey through the Norse realms.
The Witch of the Woods
In the official character description, Freya is portrayed as a figure of immense power and deep sorrow:
”A Vanir goddess and princess who practices powerful, ancient magic. She is also Odin’s ex-wife and the former Queen of the Valkyries… exiled and cut off from her family, she has lived alone in Midgard for a century as a recluse in a hidden glade, often referred to as the Witch of the Woods.”
Fans of the 2018 game will recognize this as a faithful setup for her role as an uneasy ally—and potential adversary—to the “Ghost of Sparta.”
A Powerhouse Ensemble
Walger joins a cast that has steadily become one of the most anticipated in television. The production, currently filming in Vancouver, has already been greenlit for two seasons before the first has even aired.
Creative Pedigree
The series is being helmed by showrunner Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander), reuniting him with Walger after their successful collaboration on the Apple TV+ sci-fi hit For All Mankind.
Directorial duties for the opening episodes have been handed to Frederick E.O. Toye, the Emmy-winning director behind acclaimed episodes of Shōgun, The Boys, and Fallout.
Fan Reaction and Continuity
While most of the cast consists of newcomers to the franchise, the inclusion of Alastair Duncan—who voiced the wise, severed head Mimir in the games—has been hailed by fans as a bridge between the digital and live-action worlds. Walger’s casting has also been met with praise, as her experience playing complex, steely characters like Molly Cobb is seen as a perfect fit for Freya’s blend of maternal warmth and divine fury.
No official release date has been set, but with filming in full swing, a late 2026 or early 2027 premiere is widely expected.
