HBO’s upcoming horror series Welcome to Derry, a prequel to the blockbuster IT films, is officially planned as a three-season saga, according to co-creator and executive producer Andy Muschietti. The show will delve deep into the sinister mythology of Stephen King’s fictional town of Derry, Maine—unearthing the origins of Pennywise the Dancing Clown and the town’s cyclical terror.
Muschietti, who directed both IT (2017) and IT Chapter Two (2019), revealed that each season of Welcome to Derry will explore a distinct historical era, drawing inspiration from the “interludes” in King’s novel—chapters that chronicle Mike Hanlon’s research into Derry’s haunted past. “It’s a story based on the interludes of the book,” Muschietti explained. “They’re fragments of research spanning 27 years, trying to figure out what it is, who saw it, and what it did.”
The series is set to premiere in 2025 and stars Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, James Remar, and Stephen Rider, with Bill Skarsgård reprising his chilling role as Pennywise. Season one will reportedly be set in the 1960s, with subsequent seasons moving further back in time to explore earlier manifestations of the entity.
Produced by Warner Bros. Television and HBO, Welcome to Derry promises to expand the IT universe with a deeper psychological and historical lens. The showrunners, Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane, aim to blend supernatural horror with period drama, revealing how Derry’s dark legacy has shaped generations.
The three-season plan reflects HBO’s confidence in the franchise’s enduring appeal and Muschietti’s vision for a layered, time-spanning narrative. With Pennywise’s return and a cast of rising stars, Welcome to Derry is poised to become one of 2025’s most anticipated horror releases.
