A new prequel film is officially in development for The Conjuring franchise, exploring the early years of Ed and Lorraine Warren. Despite claims that “Last Rites” was the final chapter, Warner Bros. and New Line are reviving the saga with fresh creative talent and renewed fan interest.
Just weeks after “The Conjuring: Last Rites” was declared the final chapter in the franchise, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have confirmed that a prequel film is now in active development. The announcement follows the runaway success of “Last Rites,” which grossed over $487 million worldwide, making it the highest-earning entry in the Conjuring Universe to date.
Back to the Beginning: The Warrens’ Origins
The upcoming prequel will delve into the early years of Ed and Lorraine Warren, the real-life paranormal investigators whose cases inspired the series. While plot details remain under wraps, the film is expected to explore formative hauntings and the couple’s first encounters with supernatural forces.
Director Rodrigue Huart, known for his atmospheric short film “Transylvanie,” is reportedly in talks to helm the project. Screenwriters Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, who penned “The Nun II” and “Last Rites,” will return to write the script.
Casting and Continuity
It’s unclear whether Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson will reprise their roles as Lorraine and Ed Warren. Given the prequel’s timeline, the studio may opt for younger actors to portray the couple in their early years. However, fans are speculating about potential bookend scenes or cameo appearances to maintain continuity.
Beyond the Big Screen
In addition to the prequel, a TV spin-off series is also in development, further expanding the Conjuring Universe. With nine films already released and over $2.7 billion in global box office revenue, the franchise remains the most successful horror saga in cinematic history.
Final Chapter? Not Quite
Director Michael Chaves had previously stated that “Last Rites” was “absolutely the end” of the series. But as horror tradition dictates, final chapters are rarely final. The prequel marks a new phase in the franchise, promising fresh scares and deeper lore for longtime fans.
