GOTHAM CITY — The Cape and Cowl are officially returning to the production line. DC Studios has reportedly slated principal photography for Batman: The Brave and the Bold to begin in 2027, marking the official arrival of the Dark Knight in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe (DCU).
The news comes as a relief to fans who have been navigating a complex “Bat-filled” schedule. With Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II currently occupying the spotlight for an October 2027 release, DC Studios is carefully timing the production of its other Batman to avoid “Bat-fatigue” and brand confusion.
A Different Breed of Batman
Unlike the “Elseworlds” universe of Robert Pattinson’s grounded detective, The Brave and the Bold will introduce a more seasoned Bruce Wayne. Directed by Andy Muschietti (The Flash, IT), the film is inspired by Grant Morrison’s iconic comic run.
Key Plot Elements:
The Introduction of Damian Wayne: The film will feature Bruce Wayne’s biological son, Damian, a “little son-of-a-bitch” raised by assassins, who takes on the mantle of Robin.
The Bat-Family: James Gunn has teased that this film will be the entry point for the wider Bat-Family, a group often neglected in previous live-action iterations.
DCU Connectivity: This version of Batman will be the one interacting with David Corenswet’s Superman and Milly Alcock’s Supergirl.
Why the 2027 Date?
The decision to start filming in 2027 aligns with James Gunn’s “Script-First” philosophy. Gunn has repeatedly stated that no DCU project will move into production until a screenplay is finalized and perfected.
“Batman is a priority, but getting the script right is the only thing that matters. We aren’t going to rush a character this important just to hit a calendar date,” Gunn recently shared on social media.
Additionally, this schedule allows The Batman Part II to complete its theatrical run and “The Penguin” saga to settle before a new actor is introduced in the iconic role.
The Casting Search Begins
With a 2027 filming date now on the horizon, the industry’s eyes turn to the inevitable casting search. While rumors have linked everyone from Alan Ritchson to Jensen Ackles to the role, DC Studios maintains that no actor has been cast yet. Casting for the DCU Batman is expected to begin in late 2026 once the script is locked.
