Netflix’s acclaimed political thriller The Diplomat is doubling down on star power for its fourth season. Emmy-winning actors Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford, both veterans of The West Wing, have officially been promoted to series regulars, marking a major shift in the show’s evolving power dynamics.
Janney, who first appeared in Season 2 as Vice President Grace Penn, will now take center stage as President of the United States following the dramatic death of President William Rayburn (Michael McKean) in the Season 2 finale. Whitford joins the cast in Season 3 as Todd Penn, Grace’s husband and the newly minted First Gentleman. Their onscreen partnership adds a fresh layer of tension and intrigue to the show’s already complex political landscape.
Series creator Debora Cahn, herself a West Wing alum, expressed excitement about the reunion: “Working with Allison and Brad, watching them together again, and the off-the-charts foursome that is them with Keri Russell] and Rufus [Sewell]… it’s an insane bag of candy. Our expectations were high and it blew right past them”[.
Season 3, premiering globally on October 16, picks up in the wake of seismic revelations. Ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) has accused Grace Penn of orchestrating a terrorist plot and admitted she’s gunning for the vice presidency. But with the president dead and Grace now leading the free world, Kate finds herself navigating a role she never wanted, a complicated friendship with UK Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), and a disquieting bond with Todd Penn.
Production for Season 4 begins this fall, with a release date expected in 2026. The series continues to be executive produced by Cahn alongside Janice Williams, Russell, Alex Graves, Peter Noah, and Eli Attie.
With Janney and Whitford stepping into full-time roles, The Diplomat promises even more high-stakes drama, emotional complexity, and political maneuvering—cementing its place as one of Netflix’s most compelling series.
