Spider-Man Swings into Glasgow, Locals Bewildered but Mostly Delighted
Glasgow, normally known for its unpredictable weather and deep-fried culinary wonders, has traded its daily drizzle for web-slinging heroics as Tom Holland arrives in town filming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The city’s been converted into a pseudo-New York, though the occasional bagpipe still reminds you—you’re absolutely still in Scotland.

Tom Holland: Actor, Avenger, and Apparently Scottish by Now
In what seems like an unofficial relocation campaign, Holland has made himself very comfortable north of the border. First Inverness, now Glasgow. At this rate, we expect him to be spotted in the queue at Greggs, debating the merits of square sausage. He recently filmed The Odyssey with Christopher Nolan, which sounds serious, but probably had fewer explosions and more emotionally tormented staring.
Glasgow Plays Dress-Up, Again
Parts of the city centre have been glamorized as a bustling American hub. The transformation is impressive, though if you squint, you can still see a Tennent’s sign lurking behind the set. Filming will last two weeks—ample time for Glaswegians to pretend they live in New York while still pronouncing “burger” with at least three extra syllables.
On Sunday, Holland filmed an action sequence while wearing the world’s tightest onesie. He then turned to a crowd of roughly 100 fans, presumably to remind them he’s definitely not Andrew Garfield. Reports say the crowd was “excited,” though several still couldn’t believe it wasn’t just a very realistic street performer.
With parts of the city cordoned off, drivers have been re-routed more times than Spider-Man’s movie timeline. Businesses are taking it in stride, some even offering ‘Spider-themed’ discounts—which is mostly just putting a sticker of a spider on a pie and calling it cinematic.
Apparently, Glasgow’s Secret Superpower is Pretending to Be Other Cities.
From Gotham to New York, Glasgow’s been playing location cosplay for years. It’s the city equivalent of that one friend who always has a different hair colour and backstory. Glen Powell’s been filming Ghostwriter and The Running Man here too—which, frankly, sounds like Hollywood is moving in and forgetting to pay council tax.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits cinemas next July, promising high-flying drama, teary moments, and perhaps a cheeky cameo from a Glaswegian cabbie who doesn’t care about great power OR great responsibility.
