LOS ANGELES — Netflix is diving into the survival horror genre this April with the release of “Thrash,” a high-octane thriller that pits a stranded coastal community against both a catastrophic hurricane and a swarm of ravenous sharks.
Produced by Academy Award-winner Adam McKay (Don’t Look Up) and directed by Tommy Wirkola (Violent Night, Dead Snow), the film is being teased as a “blood-soaked fight for survival” that blends the natural disaster tension of Crawl with the apex-predator terror of Jaws.
The Plot: A Storm Like No Other
The story unfolds as a massive Category 5 hurricane decimates a quiet coastal town. As the storm surge floods the streets and residents are cut off from rescue, the water brings with it a terrifying secondary threat: sharks swept in by the rising tide.
The film follows three primary survival threads:
- **Lisa Fields (Phoebe Dynevor): A pregnant woman trapped in her submerged car, fighting to escape as the waters rise and predators circle.
- **Dale Edwards (Djimon Hounsou): A marine researcher attempting a desperate rescue mission in the heart of the storm.
- **Dakota Edwards (Whitney Peak): Dale’s niece, who must overcome her own agoraphobia to survive as sharks invade her home.
Production & Cast Highlights
Originally developed under the title Beneath the Storm at Sony Pictures, the project moved to Netflix for its global debut. The cast features a mix of established stars and rising talent:
A New Era of “Creature Features”
Director Tommy Wirkola, known for his ability to balance dark humor with visceral violence, reportedly utilized a mix of practical effects and cutting-edge CGI to bring the predators to life. With a runtime of 83 minutes, critics are already calling it a “lean, mean, survival machine” designed for maximum tension.
