Venice, Italy — The film and television community is mourning the sudden loss of Diego Borella, assistant director on Netflix’s hit series Emily in Paris, who tragically passed away during production of the show’s fifth season. Borella, 47, collapsed on set at the historic Hotel Danieli in Venice on the evening of August 22, during preparations for the season’s final scene.
Despite immediate efforts by on-site medical staff, Borella was pronounced dead at the scene. A local doctor later confirmed the cause as a suspected heart attack. Filming was promptly suspended as cast and crew grappled with the devastating news.
Borella, a native of Venice, was a respected figure in the industry, known not only for his work in film and television but also for his contributions to visual arts and literature. He had trained in Rome, London, and New York, and was admired for his elegance, humor, and creative brilliance.
“He was a handsome, elegant boy with a lot of style,” said longtime friend Mattia Berto. “Diego had a great sense of humor, was brilliant, and very talented. His is a young life cut short, so there aren’t many words. Just great sadness”.
The cast, including lead actress Lily Collins, had recently shared joyful behind-the-scenes glimpses of filming in Venice, underscoring the vibrancy of the production just days before the tragedy. The juxtaposition of celebration and loss has left fans and colleagues reeling.
Paramount Television Studios released a statement expressing deep sorrow: “Our hearts go out to the individual’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time”.
As the production pauses to honor Borella’s memory, the loss serves as a sobering reminder of the fragility of life—even amid the glamour and excitement of cinematic storytelling. Season five of Emily in Paris, originally slated for release on December 18, now carries the weight of this profound absence.
Diego Borella’s legacy will live on in the stories he helped bring to life, and in the hearts of those who knew and admired him.
