LOS ANGELES — Nearly 18 years after the original anti-hero took flight, Will Smith has officially confirmed that a sequel to the 2008 blockbuster Hancock is finally in active development. In a surprise reveal that has sent shockwaves through social media, Smith also dropped a major casting bombshell: global superstar Zendaya is the top choice to join the franchise.
The announcement came during a recent livestream, where Smith teased that the creative team has landed on a “really cool” concept that justifies returning to the character after nearly two decades in development limbo.
A New Chapter for the Reluctant Hero
Released in 2008, the original Hancock subverted the burgeoning superhero genre by introducing John Hancock (Smith), a cynical, alcoholic amnesiac with god-like powers who was more of a public nuisance than a protector. While the film ended with Hancock finding a measure of redemption and discovering his immortal origins alongside Mary (Charlize Theron), the story left the door wide open for a deeper exploration of their history.
”There’s a really cool, really cool Hancock 2 idea,” Smith revealed during the stream. “We haven’t even talked about it publicly, so I’m gonna give you one little piece: Zendaya is being approached for a role.”
The “Z” Factor
While details regarding Zendaya’s potential character remain under tight wraps, industry insiders speculate she could play a younger immortal or a new foil to Smith’s character. Adding the Dune and Euphoria star is seen as a strategic move to bridge the gap between the original audience and a younger generation of fans.
Potential Returning Cast & Crew:
- Will Smith: Confirmed to return as John Hancock.
- Charlize Theron: Has previously expressed a “heartbeat” interest in reprising her role as Mary.
- Jason Bateman: While not yet confirmed, his character Ray Embrey was the heart of the first film’s PR-focused plot.
The Long Road to Redemption
The path to Hancock 2 has been anything but a straight line. Over the years, director Peter Berg and producers Akiva Goldsman and Michael Mann have cited “scheduling hurdles” as the primary reason for the delay. However, following the massive box-office success of Smith’s recent projects, Sony Pictures appears ready to fast-track the project.
What’s Next for the Sequel?
With the “idea” now solidified and Smith actively pitching to talent like Zendaya, the next steps will involve finalizing a director and locking in a production schedule. Fans are already theorizing whether the sequel will dive into the origins of the “immortal pairs” or introduce a new cosmic threat that forces Hancock back into the spotlight.
