After years of “development hell” that would make a zombie blush, the long-awaited sequel to the 2013 blockbuster is finally showing signs of life. Following the massive Paramount-Skydance merger in late 2025, the undead franchise has been officially bumped up to “priority” status.

The primary catalyst for the sequel’s return is David Ellison, the new CEO of the merged Paramount-Skydance. Ellison, who served as an executive producer on the original film, has reportedly placed World War Z 2 on a shortlist of “must-hit” franchises alongside Top Gun 3 and Star Trek.
The studio aims to release 15–20 theatrical films annually, and they are looking for proven global hits to anchor that slate.
