Milan, Italy — September 4, 2025
Giorgio Armani, the legendary Italian designer who revolutionized global fashion with his understated elegance and relaxed tailoring, has died at the age of 91. The Armani Group confirmed his passing early Thursday, stating that the designer died peacefully at home in Milan.
Armani had been recovering from an undisclosed illness and was notably absent from his spring/summer 2026 runway shows in June. His longtime collaborator Leo Dell’Orco took the final bow in his place, sparking concern among industry insiders. Plans were underway to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his namesake brand during Milan Fashion Week this month.
Born in Piacenza on July 11, 1934, Armani began his career as a window dresser before launching his fashion empire in 1975. His signature deconstructed suits and neutral palettes redefined power dressing for both men and women, earning him the nickname “Re Giorgio” — King George — in Italy.
A public funeral chamber will be held at Armani/Teatro in Milan from Saturday through Sunday, September 7th, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. In accordance with his wishes, the funeral will be private.
Armani leaves behind a fashion legacy that spans haute couture, cosmetics, hotels, and even sports — including ownership of the EA7 Emporio Armani Milan basketball team. At the time of his death, his empire was valued at over $10 billion.
Tributes are pouring in from across the fashion world, with many remembering Armani not just for his designs, but for his quiet charisma and unwavering commitment to elegance. As Italian journalist Marco Fattorini wrote, quoting Armani himself:
“Elegance is not about being noticed, but about being remembered.”
The world will remember Giorgio Armani — not just for what he created, but for how he changed the way we see ourselves.
