In a recent interview with GQ, actor Mark Ruffalo reignited fan hopes for a standalone Hulk film, revealing that talks with Marvel Studios are ongoing, though the project remains far from confirmed. Ruffalo, who has portrayed Bruce Banner/The Hulk since 2012’s The Avengers, expressed both enthusiasm and realism about the possibility of headlining his own movie.
“I’d Love to Have a Solo Hulk Movie”
Ruffalo didn’t mince words when asked about his interest: “Yeah, I’d love to have a solo Hulk movie,” he said. Despite his long tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the character hasn’t had a solo outing since 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, which starred Edward Norton. Ruffalo’s version of the character has since appeared in ensemble films and supporting roles, but never as the central figure.
Why the Wait? Universal Holds the Rights
The biggest obstacle, Ruffalo explained, is rights ownership. “I don’t know if you know the story of that, but it’s not really owned by Marvel. It’s a Universal property,” he said. This legal entanglement has long prevented Marvel Studios from producing a standalone Hulk film without Universal’s involvement.
A Story Worth Telling—If They Can Crack It
Despite the complications, Ruffalo remains hopeful. “We keep talking about it, what it would be,” he shared. He acknowledged that multiple Hulk stories have already been told, prompting questions about audience appetite: “There’s been so many Hulk movies already, it’s like, does anyone really want another one?” Still, he believes fans would respond positively if the right story came along.
Fan Speculation: Could “World War Hulk” Be the Answer?
Among fans, one storyline continues to dominate speculation: World War Hulk. The comic arc features a more vengeful, strategic Hulk returning to Earth after exile—a narrative that could offer Ruffalo’s version a fresh and emotionally complex direction. While Ruffalo hasn’t confirmed any specific plot, he hinted that if they could “crack” the story, it might be worth pursuing.
For now, the future of a solo Hulk movie remains uncertain. Ruffalo’s candid remarks suggest that while Marvel is open to the idea, legal hurdles and narrative challenges continue to stall progress. Still, with the MCU evolving post-Endgame, and audiences craving deeper character-driven stories, the Green Goliath may yet get his moment in the spotlight.
