CULVER CITY, CA — The music has officially stopped for Prime Video’s ambitious YA musical drama, The Runarounds. Amazon MGM Studios has opted not to renew the series for a second season, bringing the coming-of-age story to a close just seven months after its September 2025 debut.
The decision comes despite a massive “five-season arc” originally envisioned by series creator Jonas Pate (Outer Banks). While the show failed to break into Nielsen’s streaming Top 10, it developed a dedicated niche following that has been left reeling by the weekend announcement.
Why the Plug Was Pulled
Industry insiders point to a “perfect storm” of factors that led to the quiet cancellation of the Wilmington-set drama:
- Struggling Metrics: Despite charting on Luminate’s Top 50 in its opening weeks with 1.9 million hours watched, the show never achieved the “breakout” status of fellow Prime Video YA hits like The Summer I Turned Pretty.
- Cast Availability: Lead actress Lilah Pate recently booked a series regular role in Taylor Sheridan’s upcoming Tulsa King spinoff, Frisco King, signaling that the core ensemble was already moving on to new ventures.
- Behind-the-Scenes Friction: The production was reportedly clouded by allegations of “inappropriate and aggressive behavior” on set involving showrunner Jonas Pate, according to reports that surfaced in late 2025. Although no legal action followed, the controversy reportedly cooled the studio’s enthusiasm for a second season.
”The Band Is Here to Stay”
In a rare twist for a scripted series, the fictional band at the heart of the show—comprised of real-life musicians William Lipton, Axel Ellis, Jeremy Yun, Zendé Murdock, and Jesse Golliher—will continue to exist long after the cameras have stopped rolling.
The quintet released a heartfelt statement to fans on Instagram following the news:
”While the TV series may have come to a close, as a band we’re here to stay. This is merely the end of one chapter and the beginning of a new one… If the show inspired anyone, at any age, to try and start a garage band with their friends, then the mission was successful.”
What’s Next for the Group?
While the Lamberts’ story is over on screen, the real-life Runarounds are currently in the middle of their “Minivan Tour,” which includes a scheduled appearance at Bonnaroo and a summer trek through late June. The group also teased that their debut studio album is in the final stages of production.
The Streaming Graveyard
The cancellation of The Runarounds highlights the increasingly ruthless landscape of streaming television in 2026. As platforms pivot toward “high-reliability” franchises, middle-tier dramas—even those with high-pedigree creators like the Pate brothers—are finding it harder than ever to secure a sophomore season.
For fans wanting to relive the journey, the eight-episode first season remains available to stream on Prime Video.
