DERRY, ME — Just when fans thought the Deadlights had faded forever, the nightmare is returning to the big screen. Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema officially confirmed today that a third installment in the record-breaking horror franchise, tentatively titled IT: Chapter 3, is officially in active development.
The news comes on the heels of the massive success of the HBO prequel series Welcome to Derry, which concluded its first season in late 2025 to critical acclaim and blockbuster streaming numbers.
Expanding the King Multiverse
While Stephen King’s original 1,100-page novel was largely covered across the first two films, producers Barbara and Andy Muschietti have teased that “the well of Derry’s history is deep.”
According to studio insiders, Chapter 3 will not be a simple remake or a direct continuation of the Losers’ Club adult storyline, but rather an expansion of the lore established in the prequel series. The film is expected to explore the “Macroverse” and the cosmic origins of the entity known as Pennywise, potentially bridging the gap between the 1960s events of Welcome to Derry and the modern era.
Key Details Confirmed:
- The Return of the King: Bill Skarsgård is reportedly in final negotiations to don the clown suit once more.
- Creative Team: Andy Muschietti, who directed the first two films (which grossed a combined $1.17 billion), is attached to produce and is “highly likely” to return to the director’s chair after he completes work on the DCU’s The Brave and the Bold.
- The Script: The screenplay is being penned by Jason Fuchs (Welcome to Derry, Wonder Woman), working closely with the Muschiettis to ensure a “seamless expansion” of the existing cinematic universe.
”There Are More Gaps to Fill”
In a recent interview, Barbara Muschietti hinted at why the studio is returning to the franchise now:
”When we read the book as kids, we saw a horror story. Reading it now as parents and filmmakers, we see a vast, non-linear mythology. There are stories Pennywise hasn’t told us yet—gaps in the timeline that are just as terrifying as the ones we’ve already seen.”
The “Supercut” Connection
Rumors are also swirling that the release of Chapter 3 may coincide with the long-awaited “Supercut” of Chapters 1 & 2, which Andy Muschietti has claimed will feature nearly an hour of unreleased footage and newly filmed bridging scenes.
What This Means for the Franchise
The announcement marks a strategic move for Warner Bros. Discovery as it navigates a major merger with Paramount-Skydance. Keeping a “gold-standard” horror IP like IT active is seen as a priority for the new leadership to maintain a competitive edge in the genre space.
