LOS ANGELES — The “Keanu-verse” is officially expanding at Netflix. After years in development, the highly anticipated adaptation of Keanu Reeves’ record-breaking comic book series, BRZRKR (pronounced “Berserker”), is moving into high gear with both a live-action feature film and a two-season anime spinoff.
The project, which originated as a 12-issue limited series from BOOM! Studios, has become a passion project for Reeves. Not only did he co-create and write the comic alongside Matt Kindt, but he is also set to star in and produce the upcoming film.
The Legend of “B”
BRZRKR follows a brutally epic saga of an immortal warrior known only as “B.” He is a half-mortal, half-god figure who has been cursed and compelled to violence for over 80,000 years. In the modern day, B has finally found a potential out: working for the U.S. government to fight battles too dangerous for anyone else. In exchange, he’s been promised the truth about his blood-soaked existence—and, more importantly, how to end it.
Production Powerhouse
Netflix isn’t pulling any punches with the creative team behind the adaptation:
- Direction: Justin Lin (Fast & Furious franchise, Star Trek Beyond) has signed on to direct the live-action film.
- Writing: Mattson Tomlin (The Batman Part II, Terminator Zero) has penned the script and will serve as showrunner for the anime series.
- Animation: The anime will be produced by the legendary Production I.G (Ghost in the Shell), ensuring the high-octane violence of the comics translates perfectly to the screen.
“We are working together to hone in on the final vision,” Director Justin Lin recently shared, noting his excitement to honor the “spirit” of the ultra-violent source material.
While a firm release date hasn’t been set, production on the anime is expected to ramp up throughout 2026. The live-action film is currently refining its latest drafts as Tomlin balances the project with his work on The Batman Part II.
For fans of the comic—which sold over 615,000 copies of its first issue—the wait for a live-action “Berzerker” is almost over. Expect plenty of R-rated action, philosophical questions about mortality, and, of course, the signature intensity of Keanu Reeves.
