LOS ANGELES — Officer John Nolan isn’t hanging up his belt just yet. ABC has officially renewed its hit police procedural “The Rookie” for a ninth season, securing the show’s spot on the 2026–27 primetime schedule.
The announcement, made on Monday, April 13, 2026, comes as the series continues to defy the typical ratings decay seen in veteran dramas. Now entering its ninth year, the Nathan Fillion-led series has cemented itself as one of the network’s most reliable performers alongside long-running staples like Grey’s Anatomy.
The renewal arrived just weeks before the Season 8 finale, scheduled for May 4, 2026. Despite being in its eighth season, the show has maintained a massive audience, often ranking within the top 15 entertainment series for the 18–49 demographic.
- The Streaming Boost: Much of the show’s recent longevity is credited to its explosive growth on Hulu. ABC reports that The Rookie often sees its viewership numbers increase sixfold after its initial broadcast airing.
- TikTok Virality: The series has found a second life with younger audiences, with “Chenford” (the romantic pairing of characters Lucy Chen and Tim Bradford) regularly trending on social media.

As Nolan transitions from the “oldest rookie” to a seasoned training officer, the franchise is looking to grow. ABC confirmed that it is still weighing a spinoff pilot titled “The Rookie: North,” starring Jay Ellis as a rookie officer in a Washington state police department.
While plot details are strictly under wraps, creator Alexi Hawley has teased that the show will continue to balance its “comfort food” procedural elements with high-stakes character arcs.
The core ensemble—including Melissa O’Neil (Lucy Chen), Eric Winter (Tim Bradford), Alyssa Diaz (Angela Lopez), and Richard T. Jones (Wade Grey)—are all expected to return. Fans are particularly eager to see the resolution of the Season 8 cliffhanger, which promises a major shift in the Mid-Wilshire station’s leadership.

New episodes of The Rookie continue to air Mondays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC, with Season 9 expected to premiere in January 2027.
