BURBANK, CA — Dr. Oliver Wolf’s unconventional house calls have come to an end. NBC officially announced on Friday, May 1, 2026, that it has cancelled the medical drama Brilliant Minds, opting not to move forward with a third season for the 2026-2027 television cycle.
The news follows a turbulent second season for the Zachary Quinto-led series, which struggled to maintain its freshman momentum amid shifting schedules and declining linear viewership.
The Downward Spiral of Bronx General
While Brilliant Minds enjoyed a solid debut in 2024, its second season faced an uphill battle for ratings survival.
- The Ratings Slump: Season 2 saw a significant decline, averaging just 1.87 million viewers and a 0.14 rating in the key 18-49 demographic. This represented a nearly 40% drop compared to Season 1, making it NBC’s lowest-rated drama of the current season.
- The “Voice” Displacement: The writing was on the wall in February 2026 when NBC pulled the drama from its Monday night slot to accommodate expanded, two-hour episodes of The Voice.
- A Crowded “Bubble”: The cancellation comes as NBC clears its slate ahead of upfronts, also axing the freshman cheerleading comedy Stumble.
A Bittersweet Farewell
Based on the life and work of famed neurologist Dr. Oliver Sacks, Brilliant Minds was praised by critics for its empathetic portrayal of neurodiversity and Zachary Quinto’s nuanced performance as a doctor with prosopagnosia (face blindness).
”Dr. Oliver Wolf was a character who saw the world differently, and we are so proud of the stories we told about the beauty of the human mind,” a production spokesperson said. “While we are saddened to say goodbye to Bronx General, we are grateful to the fans who took this journey with us.”
When Will the Final Episodes Air?
Though the show is officially cancelled, fans will still get a chance to see how the story ends. NBC has scheduled the final six episodes of Season 2 to begin airing on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.
The remaining episodes—which were completed before the cancellation news—are expected to wrap up the major character arcs for the team of interns, including Dr. Ericka Kinney (Ashleigh LaThrop) and Dr. Van Markus (Alex MacNicoll). The series finale is currently slated to air on July 1, 2026.
The first season and all currently aired episodes of Season 2 remain available for streaming on Peacock. The final six episodes will also be added to the platform the day after their broadcast premiere starting in late May.
