HOLLYWOOD — Nearly two decades after Dr. Robert Neville first walked the desolate streets of Manhattan, the post-apocalyptic world of I Am Legend is officially returning. Warner Bros. has confirmed that production is ramping up on I Am Legend 2, a high-stakes sequel that will see Will Smith reprise his iconic role alongside Academy Award nominee Michael B. Jordan.
The project, which has been in development since 2022, took a massive leap forward in April 2026 with the official attachment of director Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts).
The “Canon” Twist: Neville Lives
The most significant hurdle for a sequel—the death of Smith’s character in the 2007 theatrical cut—has been cleared through a bold narrative choice. Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, who is returning to pen the script, confirmed that the sequel will follow the alternate DVD ending of the original film.

Michael B. Jordan’s Role: A New Leader
While Michael B. Jordan’s character remains shrouded in mystery, Will Smith recently shared that the two stars spent a week developing the story alongside Goldsman.
”Michael B. Jordan was a part of creating the idea,” Smith said in a recent interview. “It’s a really, really cool concept. We are picking up where the DVD version left off—where my character lived.”
Speculation suggests Jordan will play a leader of a new human settlement in Connecticut, potentially clashing or collaborating with a weathered, older Neville as they navigate the long-term evolution of the Darkseeker virus.
Production Timeline and Release
While fans were eager for a 2025 release, the project was pushed back to accommodate Michael B. Jordan’s filming schedule for The Thomas Crown Affair.
For Will Smith, the sequel represents a return to one of his most beloved roles following his recent success with Bad Boys: Ride or Die.
