TORONTO — The ice-laden world of professional hockey proved to be the ultimate goldmine at this weekend’s Canadian Screen Awards, as Crave’s breakout romantic drama Heated Rivalry completed a historic, clean sweep of the nation’s top television honors.
The critically acclaimed series entered the weekend riding an unprecedented wave of momentum and left with a record-shattering 16 trophies, winning every single category it was nominated for across the multi-night celebration. The dominant run culminated at Sunday’s marquee televised gala, hosted by comedian Andrew Phung, where the series officially locked down the coveted prize for Best Drama Series.
A Record-Setting Weekend Sweep
Heated Rivalry, which chronicles a steamy, complex romance between two competing professional hockey players, has rapidly transformed from a domestic cult favorite into an international television phenomenon.
The show laid the groundwork for its record-breaking haul during Saturday night’s scripted television gala, snapping up 13 craft and technical awards. It then capitalized on its momentum during Sunday’s live broadcast, securing its final three major accolades: Audience Choice, Best Drama Series, and Best Lead Performer for its breakout star, Hudson Williams.
Show creator Jacob Tierney achieved a spectacular personal hat trick over the weekend. Alongside taking home individual Screen Awards for both Best Direction and Best Writing in a Drama Series for his work on the hockey drama, Tierney also picked up a trophy on Friday night as an executive producer for The Traitors Canada, which won Best Reality/Competition Series.
Hudson Williams Takes Lead Actor Glory
Accepting the trophy for Best Lead Performer, Drama Series, star Hudson Williams delivered an emotional speech, beating out a competitive field that included his own co-star, François Arnaud. Williams’ electric on-screen chemistry with castmate Connor Storrie has been widely credited as the emotional engine driving the series.
”A few years ago, nobody would have thought that a series about gay hockey players would become the toast of the Canadian entertainment industry,” industry analysts noted following the historic sweep.
Co-star Sophie Nélisse added to the show’s acting hardware by securing the award for Best Supporting Performer in a Drama.
Other Big Winners on Screen and Film
While Heated Rivalry undeniably controlled the dramatic television categories, several other Canadian juggernauts carved out major victories during the star-studded weekend.
The 2026 broadcast also marked a structural milestone for the Canadian Academy. For the first time in its history, the main gala was simulcast across multiple major domestic networks and their corresponding digital streaming platforms—including CBC, CTV, and Global—reflecting an intentional push to amplify homegrown cultural achievements.
The evening concluded with a raucous hometown reception for Toronto-born Saturday Night Live alum Mike Myers, who walked away with this year’s honorary Icon Award for his generational contributions to comedy and Canadian culture.
