LOS ANGELES — Michael Keaton is set to direct and star opposite Morgan Freeman in Rode to Ruin, an original Western thriller scripted by R. Dean McCreary.
The project marks a major screen reunion for the two acclaimed actors, who last shared the screen nearly four decades ago in the 1988 drama Clean and Sober.
A High-Stakes Chase Across the Old West
In Rode to Ruin, Keaton will portray retired U.S. Marshal Henry Tillman, a lawman who has spent forty years relentlessly hunting for his wife’s killer. When the cold trail finally heats up, it leads him to an aging outlaw named Joseph Mulberry—played by Freeman—who is suffering from memory loss and harboring a deeply buried truth that neither man may survive.
Keaton, who previously stepped behind the camera to direct features such as Knox Goes Away and The Merry Gentleman, noted that the film transcends traditional genre tropes.
- Layered Narrative: “When I first read it, I thought, this is really good—and there’s more here for Morgan and me to mine together,” Keaton said. “Just as The Shawshank Redemption isn’t simply a prison movie, Rode to Ruin isn’t simply a Western. It’s a story with a lot of layers that happens to unfold in the West.”
- Genre Legacy: Freeman brings extensive Western experience to the production, having previously starred in Clint Eastwood’s Oscar-winning classic Unforgiven.
Production and Creative Team
The film is produced by Lori McCreary, Michael Keaton, Kelly Mendelsohn, and Gary Lucchesi, serving as a joint production between Revelations Entertainment and George & Leona Productions.
“Rode to Ruin is a deeply human story about forgiveness, revenge, redemption and the choices people make when time is running out,” producer Lori McCreary said. “The prospect of Michael directing and sharing the screen with Morgan is everything we hoped this film could become.”
Production timelines and a targeted release date have yet to be officially announced by the studio.
