LOS ANGELES — David Zayas is set to reprise his iconic role as Angel Batista in the upcoming second season of Paramount+’s Dexter: Resurrection, bringing the veteran Miami lawman back to the franchise despite his shocking death in the first season.
Zayas was recently spotted on location in New York City’s Times Square filming scenes alongside series lead Michael C. Hall, sporting the character’s trademark fedora and classic attire.
A Familiar Manifestation From Beyond the Grave
Batista met a tragic end during the closing stretch of Dexter: Resurrection‘s inaugural season, when he was fatally shot by Leon Prater—the billionaire mastermind behind a secret society of serial killers—after tracking Dexter to New York in pursuit of exposing him as the Bay Harbor Butcher.
While studio representatives have confirmed that Batista is indeed still dead, his return follows a long-standing narrative tradition within the Dexter universe where deceased characters reappear.
- Psychological Conscience: Franchise veterans such as Harry Morgan (James Remar) and Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter) have historically returned after death to serve as internal projections, guiding or antagonizing Dexter’s fractured psyche.
- Speculative Mechanics: Production insiders have not officially specified whether Zayas will appear via flashback sequences or as a psychological manifestation of Dexter’s lingering guilt, though his spotted attire points heavily toward the latter.
Expanding Cast and Season 2 Outlook
Zayas joins a rapidly expanding roster for the sophomore season of Dexter: Resurrection, which has recently added high-profile talent including Brian Cox as the notorious “New York Ripper” and Dan Stevens as “The Five Borough Killer”. Additionally, franchise alum Desmond Harrington has been upped to a series regular for the upcoming episodes.
Production on Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 is currently underway in New York, with a premiere date yet to be announced by Paramount+.
