Fresh off a massive 2026 Super Bowl halftime performance, global superstar Bad Bunny (Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) is finally stepping into the spotlight as a leading man. The artist has officially signed on for his first lead role in the upcoming historical drama, Porto Rico.
Directed by fellow Puerto Rican icon and Grammy winner René “Residente” Pérez Joglar, the film is being described as a “Caribbean Western” that dives deep into the island’s late-19th-century struggle for identity.
The Role: A Revolutionary Hero
Bad Bunny will portray José Maldonado Román, the real-life revolutionary known as “Aguila Blanca” (White Eagle). The story follows Román as he leads a gang of ex-convicts in a fight against colonialism during a volatile period of Puerto Rican history.
”I have dreamed of making a film about my country since I was a child,” Residente told Deadline. “This film is a reaffirmation of who we are—told with the intensity and honesty that our history deserves.”
An A-List Ensemble
While Bad Bunny takes the lead, the production has assembled a powerhouse supporting cast of Academy Award winners and nominees:
- Javier Bardem
- Edward Norton (who is also producing)
- Viggo Mortensen
The project is backed by high-profile talent behind the scenes as well, with Alejandro G. Iñárritu (The Revenant, Birdman) serving as executive producer and Alexander Dinelaris (Birdman) co-writing the script.
Why “Porto Rico”?
The film’s title uses the anglicized spelling “Porto Rico,” which was the official name used under U.S. rule from 1900 to 1932. This choice signals the movie’s focus on the era of transition and resistance that shaped the island’s modern history.
From Cameos to Center Stage
This marks a major career milestone for Bad Bunny, who has carefully built his acting résumé over the last few years with scene-stealing supporting roles:
- 2022: Bullet Train (as “The Wolf” opposite Brad Pitt)
- 2025: Caught Stealing (Darren Aronofsky’s crime thriller)
- 2025: Happy Gilmore 2 (with Adam Sandler)
While his previously announced Marvel project, El Muerto, famously stalled in developmental limbo, Porto Rico appears to be the prestigious, home-grown project that will define his transition from musician to serious actor.
