HOLLYWOOD — After years of anticipation and quiet development, the live-action adaptation of the blockbuster video game franchise Gears of War is finally moving into high gear.
Director David Leitch (The Fall Guy, Deadpool 2) provided a promising update over the weekend, confirming that the project is no longer just a “plan” but a near-certainty. Speaking during a press circuit at CinemaCon on April 17, 2026, Leitch revealed that the production has reached a critical creative milestone.
“100% Behind It”: A New Draft and Studio Support
Since Netflix first acquired the rights in 2022, progress on the adaptation has been methodical. However, Leitch’s recent comments suggest the project has cleared the most difficult hurdles of the pre-production process.
- A “Great” Script: Screenwriter Jon Spaihts (Dune: Part Two, Doctor Strange) has turned in a new draft that Leitch describes as being in “great shape.”
- The Studio Stance: Netflix is reportedly “100% behind” the film, viewing it as a centerpiece for its 2026–2027 action slate.
- The Synergy: Developer The Coalition is heavily involved, aiming for the movie to launch alongside the hype for the upcoming game, Gears of War: E-Day, which is slated for a late 2026 release.
”Gears of War, I think, is going to happen,” Leitch told Collider. “We have a great draft that’s in progress… the studio’s more determined than ever to make it. It’s all lining up.”
The “Delta Squad” Dilemma: Casting Rumors Heat Up
While the script is finalized, the question of who will wear the iconic COG armor remains unanswered. One name, however, continues to dominate the conversation: Dave Bautista.
The Guardians of the Galaxy star and WWE legend has been vocal about his desire to play protagonist Marcus Fenix, even filming his own “test footage” in 2023 to pressure the studio. While no official casting has been announced, Leitch’s history with high-intensity action stars makes Bautista—or perhaps The Fall Guy star Ryan Gosling—a fan-favorite contender.
A Massive “Gears” Universe at Netflix
The live-action movie is only the first phase of Netflix’s partnership with The Coalition. The streaming giant has previously confirmed a two-pronged approach to the franchise:
- The Live-Action Feature: A big-budget movie likely covering the emergence of the Locust Horde on Sera.
- Adult Animated Series: A separate project aimed at exploring the deeper lore and “Pendulum Wars” history of the Gears universe.
With the script in “great shape,” the production is expected to begin early casting calls in the summer of 2026. Fans are keeping a close eye on the Xbox Games Showcase this June, where a dedicated segment for Gears of War: E-Day is expected to feature a surprise appearance or teaser related to the Netflix film.
As the 20th anniversary of the original 2006 game approaches, the “Ghost War” of the Locust Horde is finally ready to march from the console to the cinema.
