GOTHAM CITY (HOLLYWOOD) — The shadows of Matt Reeves’ Gotham are growing longer and more distinguished. Charles Dance, the veteran actor legendary for his portrayal of the ruthless Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones, is reportedly in final negotiations to join the cast of The Batman Part II.
According to reports surfacing on Saturday, April 18, 2026, Dance is set to play Charles Dent, the wealthy and formidable patriarch of the Dent family and father to Gotham’s rising District Attorney, Harvey Dent.
Building the Dent Dynasty
The casting marks a significant expansion of the “Bat-verse” lore. While Harvey Dent is a staple of Batman cinema, his father has rarely been explored on the big screen. Dance’s involvement suggests that Reeves intends to delve deep into the familial trauma and elite corruption that fuels Harvey’s eventual transformation into the villainous Two-Face.
Dance joins a star-studded lineup for the sequel, which is shaping up to be a sprawling crime epic:
- Sebastian Stan: Previously confirmed to play Harvey Dent.
- Scarlett Johansson: Reported to be playing Harvey’s wife, further centering the sequel’s emotional stakes on the Dent family.
- Robert Pattinson: Returning as the Dark Knight, alongside veterans Andy Serkis (Alfred) and Colin Farrell (The Penguin).
A Specialty in “Bad Dads”
At 79, Charles Dance has carved out a modern niche playing oppressive, high-status fathers. Beyond his era-defining turn in Game of Thrones, Dance recently earned acclaim playing the demanding father of Victor Frankenstein in Guillermo del Toro’s 2025 masterpiece, Frankenstein.
In the comics, Harvey Dent’s father is often depicted as a source of deep psychological scarring—an abusive figure whose “lucky coin” becomes the instrument of Harvey’s madness. With Dance in the role, fans are expecting a grounded, chilling take on Gotham’s high-society cruelty.
Production & Release Timeline
After several delays related to script development, The Batman Part II is finally moving into active production.
- Filming: Set to begin in London this May 2026.
- The “Penguin” Connection: The story reportedly picks up shortly after the events of the first film and the Emmy-winning The Penguin series, with the city still reeling from the Riddler’s flood.
- Theatrical Release: Currently slated for October 1, 2027.
”Reeves is taking the ‘world’s greatest detective’ angle even further this time,” a studio insider noted. “By bringing in a powerhouse like Dance, they’re making the corruption of Gotham feel personal, not just political.”
The “Bat-Verse” vs. The DCU
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has confirmed that Matt Reeves’ series will remain an “Elseworlds” project, existing entirely separate from the main DC Universe (DCU). This autonomy allows Reeves to continue his gritty, noir-inspired vision without the need for multiversal crossovers.
As the Dent family takes shape, the sequel appears ready to trade the Riddler’s puzzles for a more intimate look at the rot within Gotham’s most powerful lineages.
