LOS ANGELES — In a monumental move for both the gaming and cinematic worlds, A24 and Bandai Namco Entertainment have officially announced that the live-action adaptation of the global phenomenon Elden Ring will hit theaters on March 3, 2028.
The film, which is being written and directed by Academy Award nominee Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation), is currently being “Filmed for IMAX,” promising a visual scale commensurate with the sprawling, dark fantasy world of the “Lands Between.”
A Visionary Partnership
The project marks the most ambitious feature in A24’s history, moving the studio from its indie roots into the realm of high-budget, tentpole filmmaking. Garland, a known enthusiast of the source material, reportedly secured the deal after pitching a 160-page spec script directly to FromSoftware creator Hidetaka Miyazaki.
”This isn’t just an adaptation; it’s a translation of a mythos,” a source close to the production noted. “Garland has captured the sense of isolation and overwhelming beauty that players feel when they first step out of the Fringefolk Hero’s Grave.”
A Star-Studded Ensemble
A24 has assembled a powerhouse cast that blends rising stars with seasoned veterans to populate the world originally crafted by Miyazaki and George R.R. Martin.
- The Leads: Kit Connor (Heartstopper) and Ben Whishaw (Skyfall) are set to lead the narrative.
- The Supporting Cast: The film features an incredible lineup including Cailee Spaeny, Tom Burke, Nick Offerman, Sonoya Mizuno, and Jonathan Pryce.
- Familiar Faces: Also joining the fray are Havana Rose Liu, Ruby Cruz, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird, and Peter Serafinowicz.
Production Underway
Principal photography is scheduled to begin this week in Spring 2026 at various locations across England. Earlier this month, leaked images purportedly showing the construction of a massive, ruined church—resembling the Church of Marika—fueled fan speculation that the film will stick closely to the game’s haunting aesthetic.
Since its release in 2022, Elden Ring has sold over 30 million copies and earned more than 400 Game of the Year awards. With George R.R. Martin serving as an executive producer alongside Peter Rice and Andrew Macdonald, the film carries the pedigree needed to satisfy one of the most dedicated fanbases in modern media.
As the Tarnished begin their journey toward the Erdtree on the silver screen, the industry is watching closely to see if Garland and A24 can break the “video game movie curse” with the same grace they’ve brought to prestige sci-fi.
