LOS ANGELES — Nearly twenty years after she first stepped into the sensible shoes of Annie Braddock, Scarlett Johansson is officially revisiting the world of elite Manhattan childcare. In a major “full circle” moment, the Academy Award nominee is set to executive produce a television series adaptation of The Nanny Diaries for Netflix.
The project, which is currently in active development, marks a high-profile collaboration between Johansson’s production interests and the powerhouse duo of Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television.
A Modern Take on a Cultural Staple
Based on the 2002 bestselling novel by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus, the series will provide a contemporary lens on the original satire. While Johansson starred in the 2007 film alongside Chris Evans and Laura Linney, this new iteration is expected to dive deeper into the class anxieties and absurdities of the Upper East Side that a two-hour film couldn’t fully explore.
The Creative Powerhouse:
- Executive Producer: Scarlett Johansson.
- Showrunners: The series has tapped veteran writers Amy Chozick and Jenny Bicks. Bicks is widely recognized for her seminal work on Sex and the City, bringing a proven pedigree in navigating the social hierarchies of New York City.
- Production Partners: Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter of Berlanti Productions are attached to steer the series through the Netflix pipeline.
The Move to Netflix
The acquisition by Netflix follows the streamer’s ongoing strategy of securing prestige literary adaptations with major “A-list” attachments. Sources indicate that the series will move away from the lighthearted rom-com tone of the mid-2000s film, leaning instead into a more acerbic, witty, and grounded portrayal of the “Nanny” experience in the 2020s.
”The goal is to update the story for a world of influencer parents, ‘gentle parenting’ trends, and the extreme wealth gap of modern Manhattan,” an industry insider noted.
Johansson’s Expanding Portfolio
While fans have speculated whether Johansson might make a cameo appearance, her role is currently defined as strictly behind the camera. This project is the latest in her growing slate of executive producer credits, following her successful transition into a formidable Hollywood mogul.
The series is expected to move into the casting phase later this year, with a tentative production start date targeted for early 2027.
