BURBANK, CA — The cheers have fallen silent at Headleston Junior College. NBC officially announced on Friday, May 1, 2026, that it has cancelled the freshman mockumentary series Stumble, opting not to move forward with a second season.
The news comes as part of a pre-upfronts housecleaning at the network, which also saw the cancellation of the Zachary Quinto medical drama Brilliant Minds. Despite a strong creative pedigree and a cult following, Stumble struggled to find a broad enough audience to survive the network’s competitive Friday night slate.
The “Least-Watched” Label
Despite high scores from critics (82% on Rotten Tomatoes) and an even higher audience approval rating, the “rag-tag” comedy could not overcome its linear ratings hurdles.
- The Ratings Reality: Stumble averaged approximately 1.78 million viewers and a 0.16 rating in the key 18-49 demographic. According to Nielsen figures, it ranked as the network’s least-watched scripted series of the 2025-2026 season.
- Scheduling Struggles: Analysts point to the show’s difficult Friday night time slot—positioned behind Reba McEntire’s multi-cam sitcom Happy’s Place—as a major factor in its inability to build a consistent live audience.
- The Peacock Paradox: While the show reportedly saw a “halo effect” on Peacock, where it streamed the next day, the digital gains were not significant enough to offset the linear decline.
A Season of High Kicks and Meltdowns
Created by Jeff and Liz Astrof, Stumble followed the fall and rise of Courteney Potter (Jenn Lyon), an elite cheerleading coach whose career imploded after a viral scandal. Forced to start over at a small Oklahoma junior college, Potter spent the 13-episode season attempting to mold a group of misfits into a championship squad.
The series was notable for its authenticity, serving as a scripted companion to the world made famous by Netflix’s Cheer. Real-life coaching legend Monica Aldama served as an executive producer and consultant, ensuring the stunts and “mat talk” remained true to the sport.
”We are so proud of this team and the heart they put into every routine,” the creators said in a joint statement. “We may not have hit the record-breaking 15th championship, but we certainly kicked it into high cheer while we could.”
Cast and Legacy
The show boasted a powerhouse comedic ensemble that many fans hoped would get more time to gel:
- Jenn Lyon as the workaholic Coach Courteney Potter.
- Taran Killam as her love interest and fellow coach, Boone.
- Kristin Chenoweth, who stole scenes in a recurring role as Potter’s rival, Coach Tammy.
- The Squad: Ryan Pinkston, Jarrett Austin Brown, Anissa Borrego, and Arianna Davis.
The 13th and final episode, titled “Daytona,” aired in March 2026. For those who missed the journey or want to relive the stunts, the entire first and only season is currently available to stream on Peacock.
