NEW YORK — The docket remains open as NBC officially renewed the “mothership” procedural Law & Order for a 26th season on Thursday, May 7, 2026.
The announcement ensures that Dick Wolf’s flagship series will return for the 2026–2027 television season, narrowly avoiding a cancellation that had fans “on the bubble” for several weeks.
A Last-Minute Verdict
While its spin-off, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, secured its Season 28 renewal back in April, the original series faced a longer wait for a verdict. Industry insiders noted that the delay was largely due to “budgetary belt-tightening” common with long-running broadcast dramas.
Reports suggest that while the show is returning, the renewal may come with budget trims. This could mean certain series regulars appearing in fewer episodes per season to manage production costs—a strategy increasingly used by networks for veteran ensembles.
The Current Lineup
The renewal follows a Season 25 that saw significant cast changes, most notably the arrival of David Ajala (Star Trek: Discovery) as Detective Theo Walker. The Season 26 cast is expected to include:
- Tony Goldwyn as District Attorney Nicholas Baxter
- Hugh Dancy as ADA Nolan Price
- Odelya Halevi as ADA Samantha Maroun
- Maura Tierney as Lt. Jessica Brady
- Reid Scott as Detective Vince Riley
- David Ajala as Detective Theo Walker
The Dick Wolf Universe in 2026
NBC’s commitment to the Dick Wolf brand remains ironclad, even as some spin-offs face hurdles. While Law & Order: Organized Crime was recently canceled, the rest of the Thursday night lineup and the One Chicago franchise are moving forward.
Season 25 of Law & Order is scheduled to wrap up on Thursday, May 14, 2026. Fans can expect the Season 26 premiere to land in its traditional fall slot in September 2026.
Unlike many long-running shows approaching a milestone, NBC has notably not marketed this as the “Final Season,” suggesting the network is happy to keep the “dun-dun” sounding for the foreseeable future.
