LONDON — The literary world is abuzz as the British Book Awards—affectionately known as “The Nibbies”—has unveiled its highly anticipated shortlist for the 2026 Fiction Book of the Year.
This year’s selection is a heavyweight battle between long-awaited returns from literary icons and chart-topping international sensations. The shortlist highlights books that not only dominated critical conversations but also drove massive commercial success across the UK.
The 2026 Fiction Shortlist
The six books vying for the top honors are:
- **”Dream Count” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: Marking her first novel in over a decade, Adichie’s return was a massive cultural event, debuting at number one and outpacing her previous hardback sales in just its first week.
- “The Rose Field” (The Book of Dust, Vol. 3) by Philip Pullman: The long-awaited conclusion to Pullman’s Book of Dust trilogy.
- **”Boleyn Traitor” by Philippa Gregory: A historical thriller that Gregory’s publishers successfully marketed as a “feminist retelling,” reaching a broad new audience.
- “My Friends” by Fredrik Backman: The latest emotional powerhouse from the author of A Man Called Ove.
- **”Heart the Lover” by Lily King: A breakout hit for the US author in the UK market, driven by intense industry word-of-mouth.
- **”Strange Pictures” by Uketsu (translated by Jim Rion): A unique Japanese horror-mystery that has become a viral sensation for its inventive storytelling.
”The BAFTAs of the Book Trade”
Philip Jones, editor of The Bookseller and chair of the judges, noted that 2026 has been a “National Year of Reading,” with fiction sales showing remarkable vitality. The awards celebrate not just the writing, but the “total publishing” of the book—the cover art, marketing campaigns, and retail strategy that helped these titles find millions of readers.
Judging Panel & The Ceremony
The winners will be decided by a diverse panel of experts and celebrities, including Prue Leith, Oti Mabuse, and Yulia Navalnaya.
The final winners across all categories—including Debut, Crime & Thriller, and the overall Book of the Year—will be revealed during the gala ceremony at Grosvenor House London on Monday, May 11, 2026.
The competition is particularly stiff this year, as the shortlist arrives following a year that saw the loss of industry legends Jilly Cooper and Sophie Kinsella, leading to a renewed focus on the “vitality and range” of the titles currently shaping British culture.
