NEW YORK — More bad decisions are officially on the horizon. Netflix has handed a speedy Season 2 renewal to Big Mistakes, the dark crime-comedy series created by and starring Schitt’s Creek alumnus Dan Levy and comedian Rachel Sennott.
The announcement was unveiled by the streaming giant during its upfront presentation to advertisers, coming just over a month after the show’s highly anticipated April debut. Alongside the renewal, Netflix doubled down on its relationship with Levy, confirming a new first-look television deal with the multi-Emmy winner.
Sibling Sabotage and Shady Syndicates
Big Mistakes follows Nicky (Levy), an openly gay pastor, and his chaotic sister Morgan (played by breakout star Taylor Ortega). The directionless New Jersey siblings find themselves hopelessly out of their depth after a botched necklace theft intended for their dying grandmother accidentally entangles them in a ruthless local organized crime syndicate.
The eight-episode first season, which heavily features Laurie Metcalf as the siblings’ delusional, mayoral-candidate mother, Linda, became an instant hit for the platform. Big Mistakes quickly scaled the charts, peaking at No. 3 on Netflix’s global Top 10 English-language TV chart with 4.4 million views in its second week alone.
Expressing his gratitude in a statement via Netflix’s Tudum, Levy teased that the stakes will only get higher for the Dardano family:
“Very grateful and beyond excited to continue the Big Mistakes adventure and my creative collaboration with Netflix. Season 2 is already in the works, and it’s going to be WILD. I can’t wait to get it out there to everyone as soon as humanly possible.”
Navigating a Game-Changing Cliffhanger
While Levy has kept specific plot points tightly under wraps, a second season will directly deal with the massive bombshell dropped during the Season 1 finale, which completely upended Nicky and Morgan’s criminal trajectory.
Speaking on his pre-planned layout for the series, Levy previously hinted to Variety that the narrative rope is tightening around the main characters. “There is a very pre-planned criminal path that has already been laid out,” Levy noted. “A Season 2 would just be: There’s no way out now.”
Tracey Pakosta, Vice President of Comedy Series at Netflix, echoed the platform’s excitement for the show’s future:
”We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Dan and bring more of his wonderfully funny and compelling stories to life. Big Mistakes is the most recent example of Dan’s singular voice and vision connecting with audiences around the world. We can’t wait to see what he has in store for season two.”
Production Heading Back to the Garden State
The core ensemble cast—including Levy, Ortega, Metcalf, Abby Quinn, Boran Kuzum, and Jack Innanen—is all expected to return for the second installment.
Netflix has confirmed that principal photography for Season 2 will return to New Jersey, which is rapidly turning into a major East Coast production hub for the streamer. A formal premiere date for the second season has not yet been set.
