LOS ANGELES — The Hollywood erotic thriller is undergoing a major, star-powered renaissance, and its latest high-profile package is officially hitting the market. Academy Award nominees Kate Hudson and Ana de Armas have officially signed on to co-lead Palm Grove, an original, big-screen psychological thriller dripping with deception and seduction.
The buzzworthy package, developed by Chernin Entertainment, is currently being shopped to major studios and streaming platforms. It unites two of the industry’s most dynamic leading ladies under the guidance of acclaimed Hungarian director Kornél Mundruczó, best known for his emotionally raw, visceral work on the Cannes-winning White God and the Oscar-nominated drama Pieces of a Woman.
A Dangerous Game of Betrayal in Miami’s Elite Enclaves
While full script details are being kept under strict lockdown, the film’s official synopsis promises a glossy, sun-drenched, yet deeply dark exploration of wealth and infidelity:
Set against the backdrop of Miami’s most exclusive, hyper-wealthy neighborhood, Palm Grove follows a seemingly picture-perfect wife whose pristine world completely shatters when she accidentally uncovers her husband’s secret double life. Instead of retreating, the discovery ignites a calculating, seductive power game between the central characters, transforming a devastating marital betrayal into the most intoxicating, dangerous game of her life.
The project is based on an original screenplay written by SXSW Grand Jury Prize-winner James Morosini (I Love My Dad), who will also serve as an executive producer on the feature. The physical production will be overseen by veterans Peter Chernin, David Ready, and Brady Fujikawa on behalf of Chernin Entertainment.
A Striking Dual-Lead Combination
Industry insiders are already praising the project’s casting, noting that the contrasting screen personas of Hudson and de Armas provide the exact psychological friction the genre demands.
- Ana de Armas: No stranger to intense, erotically charged material, de Armas previously turned heads in thrillers like Knock Knock and Deep Water. She enters Palm Grove coming off a major action-heavy stretch, having most recently headlined Lionsgate’s John Wick spin-off Ballerina.
- Kate Hudson: Hudson continues a highly diversified, creatively ambitious stretch in her career. Fresh off her recent Academy Award nomination for the musical drama Song Sung Blue, and while currently executive producing the third season of her hit Netflix sports comedy Running Point, Palm Grove offers her a rare, explicitly adult dramatic sandbox to play in.
The Resurgence of Adult-Oriented Hollywood
For the global film industry, Palm Grove arrives at a highly telling cultural moment. Over the past year, Hollywood studios have been aggressively trying to revive the adult-oriented, star-driven erotic thrillers that defined the box office landscape of the 1980s and 1990s—evoking the glossy, high-stakes spirit of classics like Basic Instinct, Fatal Attraction, and Wild Things.
Following the massive, multi-million-dollar commercial success of recent genre entries like Paul Feig’s The Housemaid, major studios are realizing that audiences have a massive appetite for premium, theatrical stories centered around mature themes, complex relationships, and psychological warfare.
With its combination of an A-list ensemble, a critically lauded director, and a pristine, glamorous setting, Palm Grove is expected to trigger a fierce multi-studio bidding war as buyers scramble to secure one of the most provocative cinematic packages of the year.
