LOS ANGELES / VANCOUVER — Former WWE champion and actor Dave Bautista has officially closed a deal with Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television to star as the legendary Spartan god-killer Kratos in the upcoming live-action adaptation of God of War, as reported by IGN.
Bautista steps into the high-profile leading role following the departure of actor Ryan Hurst, who was originally cast as Kratos earlier in the year.
A Necessary Recast Following On-Set Injury
According to details covered by Gizmodo, Hurst suffered a severe bicep injury while performing a stunt on set in late June. The injury required immediate surgery and a lengthy recovery timeline, prompting studio executives to make the difficult decision to recast the role rather than delay production well into 2027.
Rather than attempting to patch together existing footage, production teams have opted for a complete creative reset. As outlined by Cosmic Book News, every scene previously filmed with Hurst will be completely reshot.

The story adapts the acclaimed Norse mythology era of the franchise, chronicling the emotional core of the narrative:
”Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye,” the official series logline states. “Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”
As noted by Engadget, Bautista joins a stellar supporting ensemble that includes Callum Vinson as Atreus, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Max Parker as Heimdall, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.
An official premiere date on Amazon Prime Video has not yet been announced.
