LONDON — Amazon MGM Studios is expanding its creative partnership with bestselling author Anna Todd, giving an early series greenlight to a television adaptation of her forthcoming romance novel, House of Crowns.
Stemming from Amazon’s UK division, the project marks Todd’s first-ever venture into television. The acquisition highlights the continued drawing power of the author, who secured the development deal even before an official publication date has been set for the book.
Elite Settings and Forbidden Romance
House of Crowns moves into darker, more high-stakes territory than some of Todd’s previous works. The narrative unfolds within the pressurized environment of an exclusive boarding school in Switzerland, where royalty and global leaders send their children to inherit influence and power.
The core conflict centers around a high-voltage dynamic:
- The Outsider: A lower-class student who arrives at the elite institution on a competitive scholarship.
- The Heiress: A gilded student burdened by dangerous personal secrets.
- The Fallout: As the pair drift into a forbidden romance, the cross-class entanglements threaten to upend the institution’s rigid social hierarchy and shatter them both.
A Powerhouse Creative Team
Adapting the manuscript for the screen is writer Elinor Cook, known for her work on Boys of Tommen.
The production lineup features several key figures from Todd’s previous cinematic projects:
- Executive Producers: Anna Todd, Jennifer Gibgot, Andrew Panay, Lena Roklin, and Will Gould.
- Production Banners: The series is backed by Ethea Entertainment, Luber Roklin Entertainment, and Moonage Pictures.
With the project currently in early development out of the UK, casting announcements and a target premiere window have yet to be revealed. However, industry watchers anticipate the Swiss-set drama to leverage a distinct European production sensibility as Amazon continues to build out its major romance and young-adult adaptation pipeline.
