WILMINGTON, Del. — Pop superstar and actress Selena Gomez, along with her mother Mandy Teefey and co-founder Daniella Pierson, is facing a federal lawsuit accusing them of fraud, breach of contract, and securities violations regarding their mental health startup, Wondermind.
Filed in a Delaware federal court by investor groups who poured roughly $1.2 million into the venture in 2022, the lawsuit alleges that the founders severely misled backers about the company’s infrastructure, leadership, and operational readiness.
Broken Promises and Alleged Misleading Claims
Launched in 2021 with a mission to scale “mental fitness” through digital platforms, podcasts, and wellness tools, Wondermind secured significant attention and a high valuation early on. However, the plaintiffs claim that the company’s grand promises quickly evaporated.
According to the legal filing, investors were allegedly assured of several key commitments:
- Celebrity Involvement: Gomez would actively build and market the company as its designated head of marketing, leveraging her massive global social media following.
- Operational Execution: Key revenue-generating initiatives, including a dedicated mobile application and structured partnerships, would be swiftly delivered.
- Transparent Communication: Leadership would provide accurate updates on company health, even as internal disarray mounted.
Instead, the lawsuit contends that Gomez largely ignored her contractual obligations and that the company quietly collapsed behind closed doors without notifying financial backers, who only learned of the operational disarray through investigative media reports.
Legal Defense Dismisses Claims
In response to the legal action, Gomez’s defense team forcefully pushed back. Her attorney, Mathew S. Rosengart, issued a public statement condemning the allegations as entirely false.
“The allegations that Selena Gomez engaged in any way whatsoever in any purported ‘fraud’ or other wrongdoing are completely meritless, both factually and legally,” Rosengart stated.
Legal representatives have confirmed they will vigorously defend against the lawsuit and move for a complete dismissal of the claims. Meanwhile, representatives for the other co-founders have also disputed any intentional misconduct as the case winds its way through federal court.
