LOS ANGELES — The wizarding world is getting a major casting shake-up before production on its sophomore season even begins. Game of Thrones alum Kit Harington has officially joined HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series as the flamboyant and conceited wizard Gilderoy Lockhart.
Harington steps into the role for Season 2, replacing fellow British actor Nicholas Hoult, who had to exit the production due to ongoing scheduling conflicts with other high-profile film and television commitments.
A Familiar Face for the Wizarding World
While this marks Harington’s first live-action entrance into the franchise, he is already well-acquainted with the character. Late last year, Harington voiced Gilderoy Lockhart for Audible’s comprehensive full-cast audio editions of the Harry Potter books.
Speaking about his affinity for the role, Harington previously expressed his lifelong love for J.K. Rowling’s magical universe, calling Lockhart one of the most entertaining and fun literary characters to bring to life.
- The Character: Lockhart is introduced in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets—the narrative focal point for Season 2—as the glamorous new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts whose impressive public persona quickly unravels as a fraud.
- The Predecessor: Kenneth Branagh famously portrayed the character in the 2002 film adaptation. Harington will now bring a fresh comedic vanity to the role for television audiences.
Production and Creative Leadership
The multi-season HBO adaptation is one of the network’s most ambitious undertakings. Season 1, which covers Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is slated to premiere on Christmas Day. Meanwhile, pre-production and casting are actively underway for Season 2, which is set to begin filming this autumn under the guidance of showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director-executive producer Mark Mylod.
Harington joins an acclaimed ensemble cast for the series, which features Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.
Representatives for both Harington and Hoult have not yet issued further statements, but HBO confirmed the recasting via official channels to keep production on track.
