LOS ANGELES — Apple TV+ is officially heading to the Florida panhandle for a messy intersection of religion, infidelity, and homicide. The tech giant’s streaming platform has handed a series order to Guilty Creatures, a true-crime psychological thriller starring three-time Emmy and Golden Globe winner Julia Garner.
Acclaimed filmmaker Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Pam & Tommy) has signed on to direct and executive produce the project, which is adapted from Mikita Brottman’s nonfiction book, Guilty Creatures: Sex, God, and Murder in Tallahassee, Florida.
The high-profile series marks a rapid creative pivot for Gillespie following the troubled theatrical run of DC Studios’ Supergirl, returning the director to the prestige television sandbox where he previously earned an Emmy nomination.
18 Years as Killers
Rather than tracking a traditional police procedural or courtroom drama, Guilty Creatures is designed as an intense character study exploring the decades-long psychological aftermath of a crime. According to the network’s official synopsis, the adaptation:
”…delves into the psyche of a torrid romance and subsequent act of murder between two young, adulterous but God-fearing lovers, unraveling their complex lives and the emotional toll of living as killers for 18 years. This riveting true-crime narrative, set against a backdrop of sex and murder in the Florida panhandle, promises to become an instant classic.”
Playwright and screenwriter Sarah DeLappe (Bodies Bodies Bodies) is penning the television script, while Stuart Zicherman (American Sports Story, The Shrink Next Door) has boarded the production to serve as showrunner and fellow executive producer.
A Powerhouse Partnership
The series serves as a major collaboration between Tomorrow Studios (One Piece, Physical) and the first-look creative deals held by both its lead star and director. Garner will executive produce via her Alma Margo banner, alongside Gillespie’s Fortunate Jack Productions.

By securing the rights to Brottman’s book, Apple TV+ continues to aggressively expand its footprint in the prestige, literary-adapted true-crime space, building on the success of past limited series like Black Bird and The Crowded Room.
While a formal production schedule and broader ensemble casting announcements are expected in the coming weeks, the combination of Garner’s intense character acting and Gillespie’s distinct visual eye instantly positions Guilty Creatures as one of the platform’s most anticipated upcoming dramatic properties.
