LOS ANGELES — In a major development that has stunned the television industry, CBS has officially confirmed that original NCIS star Michael Weatherly will return to the flagship procedural for its upcoming 24th season.
Rather than a brief cameo or a single-episode guest appearance, Weatherly has signed on for a massive, season-long story arc. The news marks a dramatic homecoming for the actor, who played the fast-talking, film-obsessed “Very Special Agent” Anthony “Tony” DiNozzo for 13 seasons before exiting the main series in 2016.
The network announced the blockbuster casting move via social media, showcasing a video of Weatherly who smiled and told eager viewers, “I’ll see you in the fall.”
Courting the Broadcast Audience After Streaming Failure
The decision to fold Weatherly back into the mothership series comes six months after Paramount+ abruptly canceled the highly publicized streaming spinoff, NCIS: Tony & Ziva.
Launched with immense fanfare, the Europe-based spinoff brought Weatherly and co-star Cote de Pablo back together to explore their characters’ post-agency lives in Paris. While the single-season run successfully provided romantic closure for the fan-favorite “Tiva” pairing, industry analysts note the streaming-exclusive format struggled to capture the massive, traditional broadcast audience that keeps the NCIS franchise afloat.
By pulling Weatherly back onto network television—where NCIS will retain its dominant Tuesday night 8:00 p.m. ET/PT timeslot—CBS is looking to supercharge Season 24 with one of its most recognizable and beloved figures.
A Leadership Void in Washington
While specific plot points are being kept under tight lock and key, show insiders hint that the upcoming arc will force DiNozzo back to Washington, D.C., to spearhead a deeply personal and mysterious international case.
The timing of his return could not be more critical for the fictional Major Case Response Team. Last season, during the show’s milestone 500th episode, the series shocked fans by killing off long-serving Director Leon Vance, resulting in the departure of actor Rocky Carroll after 18 years.
With a glaring leadership vacuum at the top of the agency, rumor mills across Hollywood are already spinning over whether DiNozzo’s extended arc is a backdoor narrative to permanently install him as the new NCIS Director.
”Especially with all the tumult of losing Director Vance, I would like to see a familiar face there, so that we kind of know what our bearings are,” a source close to the production noted regarding the agency’s leadership shakeup.
Production Underway For Fall Premiere
When the new season launches, Weatherly will seamlessly integrate with the current ensemble cast, which includes veterans Sean Murray, Wilmer Valderrama, Brian Dietzen, Diona Reasonover, Katrina Law, and Gary Cole.
CBS has declined to comment on whether Cote de Pablo will make any guest appearances during the season-long arc to check in on Tony’s domestic life.
