LOS ANGELES — Acclaimed horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan is in talks to join Amazon MGM Studios’ live-action Warhammer 40,000 television series as an executive producer, showrunner, writer, and director.
The move marks a major creative milestone for the ambitious adaptation of Games Workshop’s iconic tabletop gaming franchise, which has star and executive producer Henry Cavill attached to lead.
Confirmation of Flanagan’s creative involvement first surfaced in Games Workshop’s annual financial disclosure, where CEO Kevin Rountree revealed that initial story outlines have been completed and the project is advancing into the scriptwriting phase.
Horror Mastermind Meets Dark Sci-Fi
Flanagan, best known for critically acclaimed gothic horror and psychological thriller series such as The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher, signed an overall multi-year television deal with Amazon MGM Studios.
Industry observers note that Flanagan’s background in character-driven dread makes him a natural fit for the “grimdark” aesthetic of the 41st millennium—a setting defined by decayed space empires, gothic horror, and relentless interstellar conflict.
“We have already been working with [Flanagan] to craft the creative, and we’re making some considerable advances in story,” Cavill shared on social media, reassuring fans of his continued involvement in front of and behind the camera. “Rest assured, I most certainly will [star]! Who that character is, however, shall remain a secret for now!”
A Long-Term Franchise Partnership
Amazon MGM Studios acquired the global film and television rights to Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 universe following a collaborative deal brokered alongside Cavill and Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Natalie Viscuso.
While the addition of Flanagan provides a clear creative vision, executives emphasize that building out a sprawling cinematic universe will be a multi-year effort:
- Long-Term Timeline: Games Workshop CEO Kevin Rountree cautioned shareholders that bringing the live-action television and feature film adaptations to market remains a long-term undertaking that “will take years to bring successfully to market.”
