LOS ANGELES — Netflix has officially pulled the plug on its high-profile Olympic gymnastics drama “Perfect” following the sudden departure of its star and executive producer, Millie Bobby Brown.
The project, which was set to chronicle the life of legendary U.S. gymnast Kerri Strug, was reportedly shelved on Friday, April 10, 2026, after Brown withdrew citing “creative differences” with the production team.
A Project in Freefall
The cancellation marks a rare stumble in the long-standing and highly lucrative partnership between Netflix and Brown, who rose to global superstardom as Eleven in Stranger Things.
- The Lead Role: Brown was attached to portray Kerri Strug, the “Magnificent Seven” gymnast who became a national hero at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics by landing a vault on a severely injured ankle to secure the Gold Medal for Team USA.
- Behind the Scenes: The production had already faced a rocky road before Brown’s exit. Original director Gia Coppola departed the project earlier this year and was replaced by Cate Shortland (Black Widow).
- The Final Straw: Sources indicate that disagreements over the script’s direction—penned by Ronnie Sandahl—led to Brown’s decision to “dismount” from the film just three months before its scheduled June start date.
The “Netflix Golden Child” Stays Busy
While Perfect is officially dead at the streamer, industry insiders emphasize that the relationship between Netflix and Brown remains “rock solid.” The cancellation is seen less as a rift and more as an accommodation for their most valuable star.
The Legacy of the “Magnificent Seven”
The shelving of Perfect is a disappointment for sports historians and film fans alike. Kerri Strug’s story remains one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history—specifically the image of her being carried to the podium by coach Béla Károlyi.
Following her gymnastics career, Strug transitioned into a career in education and later served in various roles within the White House and the U.S. Justice Department. It is currently unclear if the project will be shopped to other studios or if the rights will remain with the original producers, Nik Bower and Thomas Benski.
The “Stranger Things” Aftermath
The news comes just months after the series finale of Stranger Things aired in December 2025. With the show that defined her career finally concluded, Brown has been pivotally selective about her next steps. Her decision to walk away from Perfect suggests a star who is increasingly comfortable using her significant leverage to ensure her projects align perfectly with her creative vision.
For now, fans will have to wait for the third installment of Enola Holmes this summer to see Brown back on the small screen.
