LOS ANGELES — Actor Sacha Baron Cohen is reportedly slated to bring his demonic portrayal of Mephisto to the silver screen, with insider reports indicating he will reprise the role in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Ghost Rider film starring Ryan Gosling.
According to reports from industry journalist Jeff Sneider, Baron Cohen is expected to carry the character over into the feature film, which is being directed by Shawn Levy and is currently targeting a 2028 theatrical release. Sources note, however, that while the iconic lord of the underworld will feature prominently in the narrative, he will not serve as the movie’s primary antagonist.
Transitioning from Ironheart to the Big Screen
Baron Cohen officially made his debut as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Mephisto in the explosive season finale of the Disney+ series Ironheart, capping years of intense fan speculation that began during the release of WandaVision.
In the comics, Mephisto holds a deeply foundational connection to the Ghost Rider mythology, specifically through the tragic origin of stuntman Johnny Blaze. In exchange for saving his adoptive father’s life, Blaze enters into a fateful Faustian pact with the demon, unwittingly binding his soul to the entity Zarathos and transforming into the fiery Spirit of Vengeance.
While Marvel Studios officially unveiled the Ghost Rider project at San Diego Comic-Con, studio head Kevin Feige has kept specific plot details tightly under wraps, leaving confirmation of the film’s full villain lineup and secondary cast pending.
A Growing Supernatural Ensemble
The rumored casting adds further momentum to Marvel’s expanding supernatural and mystical corner, which also incorporates major players like Robert Downey Jr.’s upcoming turn as Doctor Doom.
Alongside Ryan Gosling, who is confirmed to headline the movie as Johnny Blaze ahead of an anticipated introduction in Avengers: Secret Wars, reports indicate that actress Rosamund Pike is being eyed for a key supporting role as Blaze’s love interest—a part historically tied to Roxanne Simpson in the source material.
As production ramps up ahead of its target release window, Marvel Studios has not yet issued formal confirmation regarding Baron Cohen or Pike’s involvement in the project.
