LOS ANGELES — Following the runaway success of The Beekeeper and their second collaboration A Working Man, the powerhouse duo of Jason Statham and David Ayer are officially “locking and loading” for a third round.
Miramax and Black Bear announced on Monday, April 27, 2026, that they have greenlit John Doe, an original action-thriller described as a “visceral, amnesiac pulse-pounder.” The project is set to be one of the most sought-after packages at next month’s Cannes Market.
A “Man with No Name” Mystery
In a departure from the “expert operative” roles he typically inhabits, Statham will play a character stripped of his past. According to the film’s official logline, John Doe follows a man who wakes up with zero memory, no past, and no name.
- The Eliza Connection: The only anchor to his previous life is a single face he can’t forget: a woman named Eliza.
- The Mission: As fragments of his identity resurface, he realizes he was a lethal weapon trained for a “mission still in motion.”
- The Hunt: The very clandestine organization that programmed him is now hunting him down, forcing John to choose between completing his deadly directive or protecting the woman who makes him feel human.
”Zak Penn has delivered a sharp, propulsive script that blends wild, inventive action with modern themes of identity,” said Jonathan Glickman, CEO of Miramax. “Bringing Jason and David together for a third time is going to push their collaboration to a new level.”
Blockbuster Pedigree
The production boasts a heavyweight creative team that signals a massive scale for the thriller:
- Director: David Ayer (Fury, End of Watch), whose “gritty, no-nonsense” style has revitalized Statham’s recent theatrical run.
- Writer: Zak Penn, the screenwriter behind massive hits like The Avengers, Ready Player One, and Free Guy.
- Producers: Statham will produce via his Punch Palace Productions alongside Paul Schiff and Zak Penn.
The “Statham Renaissance”
The announcement comes as Statham’s “Beekeeper-verse” continues to dominate the independent action market. The Beekeeper grossed over $163 million globally in 2024, proving there is a massive appetite for Ayer’s brand of “unflinching carnage.”
Notably, while Statham will return for The Beekeeper 2 in 2027, directorial duties for that sequel have shifted to Timo Tjahjanto (Nobody 2), allowing Ayer to focus fully on the original world of John Doe.
Production Timeline
Cameras are scheduled to begin rolling in September 2026, immediately following David Ayer’s press tour for his upcoming Brad Pitt-starrer, Heart of the Beast.
Fans of the genre are already drawing parallels between John Doe and classics like The Bourne Identity and Jackie Chan’s Who Am I?, but with the added “Statham-esque” guarantee of brutal, character-driven stunts and high-octane set pieces.
