LOS ANGELES — Peter Sutherland is preparing for his final mission. Netflix has officially announced that its global spy thriller The Night Agent will end with its upcoming fourth season.
The news broke on Monday, May 4, 2026, as production for the final chapter officially kicked off in Los Angeles. While fans may be mourning the end of the line, showrunner Shawn Ryan (The Shield) revealed that the decision allows the series to go out on its own terms with a “proper and thrilling conclusion” that he has been planning since the show’s massive 2023 debut.
A Move to the West Coast
In a significant shift for the series, Season 4 has relocated production from its previous hubs in Vancouver and New York City to Los Angeles.
The move was facilitated by a $31.6 million California tax credit awarded to Sony Pictures Television. For the first time, the high-stakes conspiracies Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) navigates will be centered against the backdrop of the California coast, providing a fresh aesthetic for the endgame.
The Final Mission: What We Know
While plot details for the series finale are under a strict “Night Action” blackout, the production has confirmed several major additions to the cast to help Peter Sutherland hang up the phone for good.
New Series Regulars for Season 4:
- Titus Welliver (Bosch) as Duval, a special DOJ prosecutor.
- Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine) as Cahlin, a young FBI agent.
- Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight) as Peter’s new partner, Dom.
- Elizabeth Lail (You) as Peter’s ex-fiancée, Zoe.
- David Denman (The Office) as Ford, a veteran CIA agent.
”I’ve been obsessed with eventually delivering a definitive final season to our worldwide legion of fans,” Shawn Ryan said in a statement. “We are hard at work to make our final season one our fans will never forget.”
A Legacy of “Answering the Call”
Since its premiere, The Night Agent has been a juggernaut for Netflix, consistently appearing in the “Most Popular” English-language series list.
The decision to end with Season 4 follows a slight dip in viewership during Seasons 2 and 3 compared to the historic Season 1 numbers. By announcing the end now, Netflix avoids the “cancellation fog” and ensures that Peter Sutherland’s journey—from the White House basement to an international operative—reaches a satisfying, planned climax.
How Season 3 Set the Stage
The third season, which premiered in February 2026, saw Peter investigating a dark-money network in Istanbul. The finale left several threads hanging, which Shawn Ryan previously described as a “launchpad” for the final season. With Peter’s ex-fiancée and a mysterious veteran CIA agent entering the fray, the final ten episodes promise to dig deep into the personal history that led Peter to the Night Action desk in the first place.
