LOS ANGELES — Will Smith is headed to the world’s most secure prison for his next big-screen role. The Oscar-winning actor has officially signed on to headline Supermax, a propulsive, twist-laden action thriller from Amazon MGM Studios and Miramax.
The project represents a massive worldwide acquisition deal for Amazon MGM, which reportedly snagged the rights to the film in a competitive market for a price tag valued in the $70 million range. Rather than a traditional theatrical rollout, the studio is developing the high-budget thriller specifically as a premium streaming release to anchor its Prime Video lineup.
The film is locked to begin principal photography in mid-August 2026.
Investigating Inside the Walls
Supermax centers on two elite FBI agents tasked with a highly volatile mission: investigating a mysterious murder that takes place inside a maximum-security prison designed to be entirely impenetrable. Smith will lead the film as an investigator named Rex.
While Smith is locked into the lead role, Hollywood insiders report that casting directors are currently hunting for a high-profile actress to fill the co-starring role of Rex’s sharp-witted FBI partner.
The film marks a significant creative pivot for director David Gordon Green, who is set to helm the project. Green, best known for directing Blumhouse’s recent Halloween trilogy and The Exorcist: Believer, will be stepping into the largest-budget action project of his filmmaking career.
A Powerhouse Creative Team
The screenplay for Supermax was penned by the writing duo of David Weil and David J. Rosen, who have previously found major success in the streaming landscape with hit series like Hunters and Invasion. The pair will also serve as executive producers on the film.
The project boasts a stacked lineup of veteran action producers:
- The Picture Company: Partners Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman (The Commuter) are onboard to produce.
- Westbrook: Will Smith and Adam Fishbach will produce under Smith’s personal production banner.
- Miramax Executives: Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman and President of Film Alexandra Loewy are attached as executive producers.
Smith’s Return to Standalone Originals
For Smith, Supermax represents a major milestone in his post-franchise slate. Following the massive global box-office success of Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die in 2024, the actor has primarily stayed attached to established intellectual properties.
Supermax will be Smith’s first standalone, non-franchise feature film since starring in the 2022 historical drama Emancipation.
With production fast-tracking toward a late summer start date, Amazon MGM is looking to create a major streaming event, betting heavily on Smith’s global star power to drive massive viewership numbers.
