LOS ANGELES — The monsters are officially checking back into the big screen.
In a major joint announcement, Sony Pictures Animation and Amazon MGM Studios have revealed they are partnering on a fifth installment of the multi-billion-dollar animated franchise, titled The Haunting of Hotel Transylvania. The spooky family comedy is scheduled for a theatrical release on October 8, 2027, perfectly positioned ahead of the Halloween season.
The project cements a unique, evolving relationship between the two entertainment giants. While the fourth film, Hotel Transylvania: Transformania, skipped theaters to premiere exclusively on Prime Video during pandemic-related theater disruptions in 2022, this fifth chapter marks a grand return to the cinema. Under the distribution agreement, Sony Pictures will handle the theatrical release in North America, while Amazon MGM Studios will take the lead across major international territories.
A Spooky Retrogression: The Plot So Far
The story picks up following the massive status-quo shakeup of the fourth film, which saw Dracula turn human, his human son-in-law Johnny turn into a dragon, and the historic hotel temporarily destroyed and subsequently rebuilt.
According to the official synopsis released by the studios, retirement isn’t going to be quite as peaceful as the legendary vampire had hoped:
”Drac has happily settled into retirement while Mavis takes the reins of the legendary monster hotel. But when a series of spooky and unexplained happenings sends chills through the resort, the Drac Pack embarks on its most spellbinding adventure yet: uncovering the mystery behind the haunting of Hotel Transylvania.”
Fans have already begun playfully pointing out the delicious irony of the premise: in a resort permanently populated by mummies, zombies, werewolves, and the undead, a “haunting” must be incredibly bizarre to actually terrify the hotel’s monstrous clientele.
Veteran Creative Hands at the Helm
The production team features a deep roster of franchise veterans to guide the next chapter of the $1.38 billion series.
- The Directors: Jennifer Kluska (co-director of Transformania) and Alan Hawkins (who has been with the franchise since its 2012 inception as a head of character animation) are stepping up to direct the fifth film.
- The Producers: Lawrence Jonas is producing, while franchise creator Genndy Tartakovsky and longtime producer Michelle Murdocca will serve as executive producers.
While voice casting has not yet been officially confirmed, the franchise has historically featured a star-studded lineup including Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg, Kathryn Hahn, Steve Buscemi, David Spade, and Keegan-Michael Key. It remains to be seen whether Brian Hull will return to voice Drac (after replacing Adam Sandler in the fourth film) or if further casting surprises are in store.
A Cornerstone of Animation Legacies
For both studios, the partnership represents a major win for high-quality, family-first theatrical programming. In a joint statement, Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville, Presidents of Sony Pictures Animation, emphasized how vital the Drac Pack remains to the studio’s DNA:
”These films have been a cornerstone of Sony Animation’s storytelling identity, blending a unique visual style with heartfelt, character-driven comedy. With this next installment, we’re honoring that legacy of heart and humor while delivering the unexpected surprises audiences love.”
Courtenay Valenti, Head of Film for Amazon MGM Studios, echoed the sentiment, praising the series’ rare ability to balance “irreverent humor with genuine heart.”
As the animation landscape continues to evolve, the return of Hotel Transylvania to theater screens ensures that one of the most successful, visually expressive comedic franchises of the last decade is ready to thrill a whole new generation of moviegoers.
