LOS ANGELES — One of Marvel’s most anticipated cosmic heroes is finally taking flight, and he is bypassing the small screen to make his debut in movie theaters.
In a major development for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Marvel Studios has tapped screenwriter Michael Waldron to write and potentially direct a feature film centered on the intergalactic hero Nova.
The announcement marks a major pivot in Marvel’s creative strategy. The Nova project had spent years in stop-and-start development as a potential Disney+ streaming series. However, amid a broader studio effort to scale back streaming output and focus on theatrical event films, the project has officially been redeveloped as a big-screen feature.
The Rise of Richard Rider
While official plot details remain tightly under wraps, comic book aficionados are widely anticipating the film to focus on Richard Rider, the most famous and enduring iteration of the character.
First debuting in Marvel Comics in 1976, Richard Rider is a down-to-earth teenager who is randomly selected to inherit the powers of the last surviving member of the Nova Corps—an intergalactic peacekeeping force. Granted superhuman strength, flight, and energy projection, Rider is thrust from his ordinary life into a cosmic struggle to defend the galaxy.
The groundwork for Nova’s entrance has already been meticulously laid out in the MCU. The Nova Corps was heavily featured in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and their home planet of Xandar was later decimated off-screen by Thanos prior to the events of Avengers: Infinity War. This devastating event leaves the perfect narrative opening for Rider to emerge as the sole bearer of the Nova Force.
Marvel’s Go-To Architect
By handing the reins of Nova to Michael Waldron, Marvel is relying on one of its most trusted creative minds to steer its cosmic expansion.
Waldron has quickly become a key architect of the post-Infinity Saga MCU:
- The Multiverse and Beyond: He served as the showrunner for the critically acclaimed first season of Loki on Disney+ and penned the screenplay for the $950 million-grossing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
- The Avengers Anchor: Waldron is also currently a co-writer on the highly anticipated ensemble blockbusters Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Because Waldron’s current work directly dictates how the multiverse and cosmic landscape will unfold over the next few years, his script for Nova is expected to tie seamlessly into the broader, overarching narrative of the MCU.
Casting Whispers: A “Chad Powers” Reunion?
Though the film is in its infancy and no official casting has begun, speculative buzz is already swirling around who might put on the iconic gold helmet.
Waldron himself sparked fan interest during a promotional tour for his Hulu comedy series Chad Powers, which he co-created alongside star Glen Powell. During a podcast appearance, Waldron enthusiastically suggested that Powell would make “a pretty good Nova,” prompting fans to wonder if the duo might reunite for a trip to the cosmos.
Whether Powell or another rising star ultimately lands the coveted role, the greenlight on Nova signals that Marvel is far from finished exploring the deep, star-studded reaches of its cosmic universe. Under Waldron’s guidance, the legendary space-faring hero is finally on a direct course for theaters.
