SYDNEY — Production has officially commenced on Extraction 3, bringing Hollywood stars Chris Hemsworth and Idris Elba to New South Wales, Australia, to shoot the latest installment in Netflix’s hit action franchise.
Stuntman-turned-director Sam Hargrave returns to helm the third chapter, which promises to expand the universe surrounding black-ops mercenary Tyler Rake following the global success of the 2020 original and its 2023 sequel.
Expanding the Rake Universe
The third film picks up after the cliffhanger events of Extraction 2, which introduced Idris Elba in a surprise role as Alcott, a shadowy operative who brokered the release of Rake (Hemsworth) and his partner Nik Khan (Golshifteh Farahani) from prison in exchange for taking on a dangerous mission for his mysterious employer.
Both Elba and Farahani reprise their roles alongside Hemsworth. While specific storyline details remain under wraps, the screenplay is penned by David Weil (Citadel), working alongside producers Joe and Anthony Russo under their AGBO banner.
“Our goal has always been to push the boundaries of action filmmaking, and with Extraction 3, we’re taking our biggest swing yet,” director Sam Hargrave said in a statement marking the start of principal photography.
Major Boost for Local Screen Industry
Filming is taking place across Sydney and the South Coast of New South Wales. The production is supported by Australia’s federal Location Offset incentive and the state government’s Made in NSW Fund.
State officials estimate that the shoot will create roughly 450 local crew and talent jobs while injecting an estimated $127 million AUD into the regional screen industry and broader economy.
The move to Australia marks a return home for Hemsworth after production on Extraction 2 was forced to relocate from Sydney to Prague and Vienna due to pandemic-related travel restrictions.
A Blockbuster Action Franchise
Adapted from the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks and the Russo brothers, the Extraction series has proven to be one of Netflix’s most reliable viewership drivers. Both previous entries secured spots among the streaming service’s top 10 most-watched English-language original films.
With principal photography scheduled to run through October, post-production is expected to stretch into 2027 before Extraction 3 makes its streaming debut globally on Netflix.
