BURBANK, CA — The doctors are staying in. Following a massively successful return to Sacred Heart, ABC officially announced on Thursday, April 30, 2026, that it has renewed the Scrubs revival for another season.
The upcoming installment—the show’s 11th season overall—comes after the Season 10 revival became a dominant force on the network’s schedule this spring. According to Nielsen data, the premiere episode amassed a staggering 11.36 million viewers across all platforms (ABC, Hulu, and Disney+) in its first five days, making it ABC’s most-watched comedy in the coveted 18-49 demographic.
A Return to Form at Sacred Heart
The revival, which premiered in February 2026, successfully managed a tricky feat: honoring the original series’ legacy while introducing a new generation of medical professionals.
- The Plot: Season 10 saw Zach Braff’s J.D. return to the original Sacred Heart Hospital as the new Chief of Medicine, navigating the bureaucracy of leadership alongside his “work-husband” Turk (Donald Faison).
- The Retcon: To the delight of many long-time fans, the revival essentially “retconned” the controversial Season 9 (the “Med School” year), treating it as an alternate timeline or distant spin-off and focusing back on the core hospital setting.
- The Chemistry: Critics have praised the “unfaded chemistry” between Braff, Faison, and Sarah Chalke (Elliot Reid), noting that the show hasn’t lost its signature blend of zany surrealism and gut-punching emotional realism.
The Creative Powerhouse Behind the Scenes
The renewal is another victory for original series creator Bill Lawrence, whose “Midas touch” in comedy continues. Lawrence is executive producing via his Doozer Productions alongside showrunner Aseem Batra.
”We were all holding our breath to see if people still cared about a bunch of doctors talking to themselves and daydreaming about giant squirrels,” Lawrence joked in a statement. “Turns out, they do. We’re thrilled to keep the story going and maybe finally figure out what the Janitor has been up to in the basement for the last 15 years.”
Who’s Coming Back for Season 11?
While the full cast list for the next season hasn’t been finalized, fans can expect the “Core Three” (Braff, Faison, and Chalke) to lead the charge as both stars and executive producers.
- Familiar Faces: Recurring fan favorites John C. McGinley (Dr. Cox) and Judy Reyes (Carla) are expected to continue their guest appearances.
- The New Guard: The revival has also successfully integrated a fresh crop of interns, including Vanessa Bayer and Joel Kim Booster, who are expected to play larger roles as their characters move into their residency years.
While an exact premiere date hasn’t been set, the 11th season is expected to anchor ABC’s 2026-2027 midseason lineup, likely returning in early 2027. Production is rumored to begin in Los Angeles this summer.
As the “bromance” between J.D. and Turk enters its third decade, ABC’s commitment ensures that Sacred Heart remains open for business—and for plenty of high-fives.
